newplace/newrides

now that I found a sweet place to live ( just have to move in and will post pic's) I can start doing some nice long rides again around Ontario and get some trike/trailer camping trips set up. I am looking for a replacement for my hurricane and the main reason is that it can only fit two chain rings which S_U_C_K_S , I love the bike it is awesome and fasssttt but to go up steep hills I have to walk, I am looking for a low racer that is fast and has triple chain rings and is comfy for fast rides up to and around lake simcoe and beyond , challenge recumbents are a pain to ship here to the LBS which is a shame but a optima baron can be ordered and shipped and be here in about a week , I am currently checking out these two bike and some others for my long day/night rides http://www.optima-cycles.nl/main/en/modellen/3.html?Itemid=27 http://www.raptobike.com/about.php

Is the trike no good for touring?

the trike is awesome for touring , that's why I bought it plus I can crawl up a hill on the trike with a loaded trailer full of camping stuff with no worries of falling over and I can stop on a hill and take a break then start up again =8^)

Stopping and starting is a definite plus!

Are you considering doing one of the 'Tour de Greenbelt' routes? There's one that goes from Newmarket to Jackson's point. Might be a good test of the trike on the hills ;)

I have thought about doing one of those green belt drives but it'll have to wait till next year , we have some short hills here which are very STEEP , I have learned how to stop and U-turn the trike backwards on the hills when I can't make it up :-p

My Fujin SL has a triple chainring on it works fine. I'm really surprised the Hurricane can't have a triple.

Why not just put a SRAM Dual drive on the Hurricane and for get the front derailleur altogether. Way cheaper than a new bent.

the peeps at challenge made the hurricane for a double ring (with no options on my model) for space with a triple, that's what they told me , maybe a sram drive would be an option,,

Hey Steeker....

The SRAM dualdrive is a nice option.

Another possibility is a Schlumpf Mountain Drive. Basically, a 2-speed bottom bracket that you can gear down with a click of your heel.

That would get you some realllllly low gears. :)

hey thanks for the links , I for some reason never climbed hills fast I alway's prefered to spin up them slow and safe my legs , I just let the hot shots hammer themselfs on hill after hill then I nail them near the end of the rides ,, I just want a wicked fast low racer but the NOCOM's are to much $$$ so the next best low racers are the Challenge Jester / Optima Baron or the RaptoBike which is supposed to be reviewed by Brian on B-R-O-L , I think Challenge really lost out by not pushing the NME bike , I loved your pic's from the Dempster ride,, =8^)

Have a look at this BROL thread:

...looks like people have triples on their Hurricanes and Challenge even specs them with triples as an option. I'd try something like an ultegra or 105 triple and see what happens - worth the effort to install it just to confirm one way or another.

dam it ! Paul at challenge said I could not fit a triple on my model of Hurricane , I am doing a house move comming up but ask Carey at Urbanes about it , thanks and how are ya ??

I'm not going to tell you Paul is wrong, but at the same time if it was my bike and I really wanted a triple I'd try it out. Worst case it doesn't work, but then you know for sure. Maybe you can borrow some used parts for the test so it wouldn't cost much?

I really want a triple but money is going to be tight comming up , once I settle in my new place I will try it out, thanks again Vic

Hey Steeker, have you thought of just replacing the cogs? I was thinking of splurging on a triple for my Strada. And checked out a gear calculator and saw that the gear inches on a larger cog. Would be cheaper than fitting a triple crankset, and get not too bad a lower gear selection. What about a Grasshopper with full suspension and foldability?

Hi B
sorry been off line, I found out that Rans is going to offer a Delta Trike comming up , WOW it looks wicked and it's loooooowww , I am holding off buying parts for the Hurricane till I can test ride one of those Rans Delta's. maybe I'll trade in my other bikes for it ?
